Volleyball, a discreet but very present sport
In Mauritius, volleyball does not have as strong a presence as football or athletics, but it continues to grow and inspire, especially our young people. This sport, which is played by 6 players on a court known for its friendly atmosphere and intense gameplay, is gradually establishing itself as a discreet but solid pillar of the Mauritian sporting landscape.
Passion in the neighbourhoods
Often, in neighbourhoods such as Quatre Bornes, Camp Ithier or Roche-Bois, youngsters improvise matches on concrete courts or in school playgrounds. With little equipment required, rules that are easy to learn and a strong team spirit, volleyball’s appeal lies in its simplicity. All this adds up to its growing popularity in both urban and rural areas.

Progressive structuring
Behind this passion lies a great organisation: the Mauritian Volleyball Federation (FMVB), which is affiliated to the CAVB (Confederation of African Volleyball). To promote and supervise the sport, the FMVB organises national championships every year, provides training for coaches and organises competitions for youngsters. Clubs such as Curepipe Starlight, Camp Ithier VBC and Quatre Bornes VBC play an important role in detecting and training new talent.

Regional prominence
Mauritian volleyball is not confined to the local scene. On the regional stage, Mauritius regularly takes part in the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG). During this competition, the men and women volleyball players have the opportunity to measure themselves against teams such as La Réunion, Madagascar and the Seychelles. Thanks to the commitment of passionate players and increasingly qualified coaches, Mauritian teams have often performed well despite the competition.

Volleyball at school, a breeding ground for talent
Volleyball is widely played across schools in Mauritius. Every year, the inter-school games organised by the Ministry of Education attract hundreds of pupils, both boys and girls. These competitions play a key role in identifying young talent. According to the FMVB, around 40% of club members come from schools, proof of the structuring impact of schools in the development of the sport.
A sport with values
Volleyball, more than just a sport, represents a genuine culture of collective effort, respect and, above all, of surpassing oneself. It’s growing little by little, driven by the enthusiasm of a community that firmly believes in it. Between local passion and regional ambitions, Mauritian volleyball is charting its own course.

Between passion and ambition, everything is still to play for
Volleyball in Mauritius is gaining ground day by day. Driven by a strong local passion and a desire to shine on a regional scale, the sport is ready to explode and conquer the hearts of Mauritians.
