In a context where environmental protection is becoming essential, Mauritius is no exception: every action counts. To transform our daily lives into those of a greener island, it is not spectacular actions that matter, but simple gestures that are within everyone’s reach.

Reducing and managing waste more effectively

Waste management in Mauritius is becoming urgent. In 2023, households produced 541,140 tonnes of waste, or 1.22 kg per person per day. Over the last decade, the volume of waste has grown by 29%. These figures highlight the importance of sorting, composting and reducing plastic: refusing straws, favouring bulk packaging or carrying a reusable bag are not just recommendations, they are concrete actions to lighten this footprint.

Adopting local and responsible consumption

Buying products grown or manufactured in Mauritius is not only good for the local economy: it is also an eco-friendly choice. Local products travel fewer kilometres to reach our plates, thus generating less CO2. It is also a way of promoting all that is precious about Mauritian terroir.

Energy in everyday life: saving and producing better

Our small habits can have a big impact on energy consumption: turning off unnecessary lights, using LED bulbs, unplugging appliances on standby… All of this significantly reduces consumption. And the good news is that renewable energies are on the rise. In 2022, they accounted for 23.45% of the energy mix. Several major projects are underway in Mauritius. The Arsenal solar farm produces 14 MWp, or approximately 22.5 GWh per year. For its part, the company Qair is developing four hybrid power plants (solar + batteries) for a total of 60 MW, representing approximately 6% of the national electricity supply.

Greener transport

The Metro Express is proving to be an effective alternative to cars. In 2023, it carried 12 million passengers, an increase of 60% compared to 2022. These figures demonstrate the popularity of this clean and modern mode of transport.

Preserving the island’s natural wealth

Mauritius is brimming with natural beauty, such as beaches, forests and exceptional biodiversity, and it is up to us to preserve it. Participating in community clean-ups, reducing water consumption and respecting the environment are all accessible actions that make a difference.

Every little gesture builds a big change

A sustainable daily life in Mauritius is built on simple actions: refusing plastic bags, saving energy, choosing the metro. These actions, repeated by each and every one of us, form a chain of real change. With concrete data to back it up, the impact is all the more tangible. The power of simple actions also lies in their ability to inspire and collectively transform our island towards a greener future.
