Childbirth rates in Mauritius have seen fluctuations over the years. In 2024, the island is experiencing a declining birth rate, a trend common in many developed nations. Economic pressures, career priorities, and the rising cost of living have contributed to this decline. Many couples are choosing to have fewer children or delaying parenthood.

Recognising this trend, the Mauritian government has introduced several initiatives to encourage childbirth and support families. Among these measures is the introduction of a new child allowance scheme, providing financial aid to families with young children. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with raising a child, covering expenses such as childcare, education, and healthcare.

Additionally, there are tax benefits for working parents, along with increased access to affordable childcare services. The government has also launched awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of larger families, highlighting the importance of population growth for economic stability.

These efforts reflect a proactive approach to address demographic challenges and support the Mauritian family unit. By providing financial and social incentives, the government hopes to create a more family-friendly environment, encouraging couples to consider growing their families.
