For Catholic weddings, the Episcopate of Port Louis will provide the necessary information to foreigners of Catholic faith wishing to celebrate their union in a Catholic Church. The couple will need to approach the administrative office of their residential diocese to initiate the necessary procedures.
Muslims wishing to marry in Mauritius must contact the Imam of the mosque they wish to marry at. The wedding date is normally fixed by mutual agreement between both parties but cannot take place during the holy month of Ramadan.Each family will normally invite their own guests separately. Almost all weddings take place on Sunday afternoons around 2 pm.
For Hindu marriages to be celebrated in a temple, normally an auspicious date should be found together with the priest of the temple. Hindu weddings normally take place over 3 to 4 days, traditionally starting with prayers on the Friday, the Saffron ceremony on Saturday night with vegetarian 7 ‘cari’ (curry) meal being served to guests, the wedding ceremony on Sunday and a wedding reception or ‘chowtari’ on the Monday.
