What is a non-comedogenic product ?

A non-comedogenic product is specifically formulated not to clog the skin’s pores. Pores are small openings on the skin’s surface through which sebum ( the natural oil produced by our skin ) and sweat drain. When a pore becomes clogged with excess sebum, dead skin cells or the residue of skincare products, it can create an environment conducive to the formation of comedones (blackheads and pimples). That’s where non-comedogenic products come in !

Why are non-comedogenic products important ?

Using non-comedogenic products is beneficial for :

  • Oily and combination skin:

These skin types are often prone to excess sebum, which can easily clog pores. A non-comedogenic product helps reduce the risk of blackheads formation.

  • Sensitive Skin:

Non-comedogenic products are often formulated to be gentle and limit irritation, making them safer to use on sensitive or acne-prone skin.

  • Minimalist Skin Routines :

Choosing non-comedogenic products allows you to minimise the products in a routine, ensuring that they work without causing new imperfections.

How do I know if a product is really non-comedogenic?

Many products explicitly state “non-comedogenic” on their packaging. This means that the ingredients have been selected to minimise the risk of clogging pores. However, this claim is not strictly regulated, so it is also worth checking the ingredients and avoiding those known for their comedogenic potential (such as certain mineral oils or certain types of fatty alcohols).

Benefits For All Skin Types

Non-comedogenic products offer benefits for all skin types, especially those prone to imperfections. For oily skin, they limit shine and pimples by avoiding clogging pores, which are often clogged by excess sebum. For combination skin, they balance oily and dry areas, preventing congestion in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) without drying out more sensitive areas. Dry skin with imperfections loves these products, as they are lightweight and won’t clog pores, offering gentle hydration without causing pimples. For sensitive skin, it’s best to opt for non-comedogenic products, which are generally gentle and non-irritating. This helps reduce the risk of reactions, redness and itching, while preserving the skin’s natural balance.
